Halotherapy FAQS

What is halo therapy?

Halo is the Greek word for salt.  Ancient healers recommended inhaling salt to treat respiratory conditions and other health conditions. Also known as dry salt therapy, halotherapy mimics the microclimate of a salt cave. When you inhale micro-particles of dry salt into your respiratory system, it absorbs and removes allergens, toxins, and foreign substances in your lungs and throughout your respiratory tract. Salt can also reduce inflammation and open airway passages making it easier to breathe. The benefits of halotherapy were first noted in the mid-1800’s when it was observed that salt mine workers rarely suffered from any colds, respiratory ailments or lung diseases. Felix Bochkovsky, a Polish health official, attributed this to the salt aerosol being inhaled on a daily basis. Dry salt therapy has been recognized in Europe for over 50 years for the treatment of breathing and skin problems

How does salt therapy work?

Pure, pharmaceutical grade salt is heated and ground up in a machine called a halogenerator. The micro-sized (15 times thinner than a single strand of human hair!)  crushed salt particles are then dispersed into the air, saturating the respiratory system, and work to remove mucus build up and eliminate bacteria and toxins. This unique process helps open and expand the constricted airways allowing individuals to breathe easier and more clearly. Dry Salt Therapy also provides amazing skin rejuvenating benefits when the skin is exposed during treatment.

What kind of salt is used?

Our halogenerator use 100% pharmaceutical grade salt consisting of pure sodium chloride

What are the health benefits for halotherapy?

There are a wide range of benefits for people’s health.

Scientific research has found that inhaled dry salt particles have bactericide, mucokinetic, hydrophilic, and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help to reduce inflammation in the entire respiratory tract and widen the airway passages. Dry salt particles are also known to accelerate the transportation of mucus, the elimination of residual tar and foreign allergens. A clean respiratory system naturally results in higher oxygen intake, increased energy, and an improved immune system.

Dry salt is super absorbent and acts like a sponge attracting foreign substances along its path through the respiratory tract. The dry salt can be imagined to behave like a toothbrush that cleans through the respiratory system removing the build-up of foreign elements that cause various respiratory ailments and conditions.

Salt has negative charged ions that can improve our mood and health. Inhaling particles may reduce inflammation and mucus in the lungs, improving respiratory conditions such as asthma, allergies, bronchitis, sinus congestion and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

The detoxifying and calming effects halotherapy can support the immune, nervous and lymphatic systems. The purified air can reduce physical ailments and increase lung capacity for adults, children, and athletes.  We highly recommend these treatments during allergy and flu seasons.

Skin conditions such as rashes, acne, eczema, and psoriasis can also be improved due to the natural moisturizing properties of mineral salts.

Regular and consistent dry salt therapy may help people with the following various skin conditions:

  • Psoriasis
  • Itching
  • Eczema
  • Swelling & Inflammation
  • Dermatitis
  • Dry & Flaky Skin
  • Acne
  • Rashes
  • Rosacea
  • Skin Aging

Can my family and I come in for salt therapy if we are actively sick?

It is a common misconception that the time to seek salt therapy is when a person is actively sick. The optimal time to seek salt therapy is when you are healthy and using salt therapy as a preventative treatment or while treating a chronic illness.

To maintain an atmosphere of health and wellness, we want to limit exposure to active illnesses. If you suspect either you or your child are ill, please reschedule your salt therapy session the moment you are no longer contagious and fever free for at least 24 hours.

How long are the sessions?

Because our salt cabin allows for a higher concentration of salt, all the amazing benefits of halotherapy can be achieved in only 25 minutes, so less time is need than in larger facilities. This allows our customers to enjoy halotherapy during their lunch hour or on their way home from work.

What should I expect to experience in the salt room?

Salt therapy rooms are relaxation rooms that provide a very tranquil experience. Our room includes natural décor, dim lighting, and relaxing music.  You’re welcome to take a nap, meditate, or focus on your breathing. Negative ions will help rejuvenate you and have you feeling relaxed when you leave the salt room. In adult relaxation sessions depending on how many you reserve for the room seating will vary.  For four or less you will be in comfortable, zero-gravity chairs. For a romantic date we can set the room with two loungers.

How many people are in my salt session?

There can be up to a maximum of 4 adults or children per 25-minute session.

What should I wear to my session?

The cabin is between 68 and 70 degrees, so wear whatever makes you feel comfortable. Light blankets are available in case you get chilly or just want to snuggle in during a session.

The salt is fantastic for your skin, so we recommend exposing as much skin as you are comfortable with.  Shoes and bare feet are not allowed in our salt room, so make sure you wear clean socks.  Disposable booties will be available to wear over your shoes or bare feet if you forget socks.

Are there any side effects?

No! Halotherapy is 100% natural, safe, and drug-free. After sessions, you may experience a slight cough, minor tightness in the chest or runny nose, but this is simply the salt doing its work to remove mucus, toxins and bacteria from the lungs and airways.

Are children allowed in the salt room?

Absolutely! Salt therapy is a completely safe and drug-free treatment for children and adults. Children as young as 3 months can benefit from salt therapy. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 14.  Anyone under the age of 18 must have parental consent. During a salt therapy session, children can play with toys in the Himalayan salt lining the floor while the adults relax

Is salt therapy safe for pregnant women?

Yes. Salt therapy is a fantastic choice for women who do not want to rely heavily on over-the-counter or prescribed medication for sinusitis, asthma, allergies, and other respiratory illnesses.
